Brake sensors are an additional optional safety precaution which mean that if you want to cut the motor via the brakes, you can do so by selecting a relevant Brake Sensor which we supply free of charge. NB: The will always stop as soon as you stop pedalling.
Below is some more info on which brakes are compatible with the optional Swytch Brake Sensors.
Rim Brakes: Yes!
Description: Rim brakes are a type of brake that are v-shaped and the braking force is applied by friction pads to the rim of the rotating wheel. They are completely compatible with our Swytch kit as they do not interfere with the set up at all.
Brake sensor: Rim brakes necessitate inline brake sensors. As soon as you pull down on your brake levers to let the friction pads hit the rims, the sensors will let the motor know to stop.
Disc Brakes: Yes!
Description: Disc brakes are a type of brake that use calipers to squeeze pairs of pads together against a disc. They are completely compatible with our Swytch kit. All Swytch motors have 6 screws on the outside to fit your existing disc to.
Brake sensor: Disc brakes can be either mechanical or hydraulic. If they are mechanical, you will need inline brake sensors. If they are hydraulic, and have fluid running through them, you will need hydraulic brake sensors.
Drum or Internal Brakes:
In simple: No!
Description: Drum or internal brakes are a type of brake that create friction between pads and a rotating cylinder part that sits in the hub of a front or rear wheel. If your front brake is a drum brake, then your bicycle will not be compatible with our Swytch kit.
Solution: You will need to reconsider your front brake set up to either a rim or disc brake. Our Swytch kit needs the front hub to be free for our kit to work.
